TrinityAugustine while puzzling over the doctrine of the Trinity, was walking along the beach one day when he observed a young boy with a bucket, running back and forth to pour water into a little hole. Augustine asked, “What are you doing?” The boy replied, “I'm trying to put the ocean into this hole.” Then Augustine realized that he had been trying to put an infinite God into his finite mind.

Evidence of GodThe argument for Creationism from design and order is clear in the following lines, written by Elizabeth Barrett Browning in Aurora Leigh:

Earth’s crammed with heaven,

And every common bush afire with God;

But only he who sees takes off his shoes;

The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries.

Attributes of GodOne of the greatest books written on the nature of God was by Stephen Charnock. In it he observed that “the fountain of…evil practices (is) a denial or doubting of some of the rights of His nature.” And “…when men deny the God of purity, they must needs be polluted in soul and body”

It is for this reason that all believers ought to have a deep and thorough knowledge of God’s attributes.

Eternality of GodTime is often represented by a straight line drawn on a page. We call this a time line. To get a grasp of what the eternality of God means, when you have drawn your time line you must picture God as the whole page on which the line is drawn.

God’s GloryGod’s ‘glory is how we describe the sum effect of all of his attributes. Grace, truth, goodness, mercy, justice, knowledge, power, eternality—all that he is. Therefore, the glory of God is intrinsic, that is, it is as essential to God as light is to the sun, as blue is to the sky, as wet is to water. You don’t make the sun light; it is light. You don’t make the sky blue; it is blue. You don’t make water wet; it is wet. In all of these cases, the attribute is intrinsic to the object.

In contrast, man’s glory is granted to him. If you take a king and take off all his robes and crowns and give him only a rag to wear and leave him on the streets for a few weeks, when put next to a beggar you’ll only glory a king has is when you give him a crown and a robe and sit him on his throne. He has no intrinsic glory.

That’s the point. The only glory that men have is granted to them. The glory that is God’s is his in his essence. You can’t de-glory God because glory is his nature. You can’t touch his glory. It cannot be taken away. It cannot be added to. It’s his being.

God’s GloryAlmost everything said of God is unworthy, for the very reason that it is capable of being said” --Pope Gregory the Great

God’s GloryIn 1715, Louis XIV of France died. Louis, who called himself “the Great,” was the monarch who made the infamous statement “I am the State!” His court was the most magnificent in Europe, and his funeral was spectacular. His body lay in a golden coffin. To dramatize the deceased king’s greatness, orders had been given that the cathedral should be very dimly lighted, with only one special candle set above his coffin. Thousands waited in hushed silence. The Bishop Massilon began to speak. Slowly reaching down, he snuffed out the candle, saying, “Only God is great!”

God’s InvisibilityArt Linkletter saw a small boy drawing a picture. He inquired, “What are you drawing?” The small boy replied, “A picture of God.”

Linkletter told the lad that no one knows what God looks like, to which the boy confidently responded, “They will when I get through.”

God’s LoveOne day a single friend asked a father of four, “Why do you love your kids?” The father thought for a minute, but the only answer he could come up with was “Because they’re mine.”

The children had no need to do anything to prove themselves to this father. He took them just as they were. So it is with God’s love for us. He loves us as we are, and it is his love that motivates us to trust and obey him in return.

God’s LoveThe love of God is like the Amazon River flowing down to water one daisy.

God’s LoveI asked Jesus how much he loved me. He stretched out his arms and said, “This much”—and died.

God’s LoveA father was tucking in his six-year-old son for the night. The father asked him, “Son, when does Daddy love you the most? When you’ve been fighting with your sister and getting into a lot of trouble? Or when you’ve been real helpful to Mommy and real nice to everyone?”

The son thought for a moment and then said, “Both times!”

“Right,” the father said, “and do you know why?”

“Cause I’m your special guy,” replied the boy. For that was his daddy’s pet name for him, “Daddy’s Special Guy.” The boy knew his father loved him, no matter what, because he was “Daddy’s Special Guy.”

God loves us the same way. He loves us unconditionally because we are his “special guys.”

God’s LoveOn the whole, God’s love for us is a much safer subject to think about than our love for him.—C.S. Lewis

MercyLong ago, a poor woman from the slums of London was invited to go with a group of people for a holiday at the ocean. She had never seen the ocean before, and when she saw it, she burst into tears. Those around her thought it was strange that she should cry when such a lovely holiday had been given her. “Why in the world are you crying?” they asked. Pointing to the ocean she answered, “This is the only thing I have ever seen that there was enough of.”

God has oceans of mercy. There is enough of it-and God delights to show his mercy and compassion (Micah 7:19).

MercyThe story has been told of a mother who sought from Napoleon the pardon of her son. The emperor said it was the man’s second offense, and justice demanded his death. “I don’t ask for justice,” said the mother. “I plead for mercy.”

“But,” said the emperor, “he does not deserve mercy.”

“Sir,” cried the mother,” it would not be mercy if he deserved it, and mercy is all I ask.”

“Well, then,” said the emperor, “I will show mercy.” And her son was saved.

MercyThe story is told of a politician who, after receiving the proofs of a portrait, was very angry with the photographer. He stormed back to the photographer and arrived with these angry words: “This picture does not do me justice!” the photographer replied, “Sir, with a face like yours, you don’t need justice, you need mercy!”

MercyIt is our misery that calls forth God’s mercy.

A parent knows how this is. When a child is suffering from a severe cold with a sore throat, runny nose, severe congestion, and assorted aches and pains, and all he can do is throw his arms around your neck and cry-what does this evoke in you as a parent?

It awakens your pity, and you reach out and try to relieve the child’s distress in any way you possibly can. Why? Because his misery has called forth your mercy.

PowerOn May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens in the Cascade Range of Washington exploded with what is probably the most visible indication of the power of nature that the modern world has ever seen. At 8:32 A.M. the explosion ripped 1,300 feet off the mountain, with a force of ten million tons of TNT, or roughly equal to five hundred Hiroshimas. Sixty people were killed, most by a blast of 300-degree heat traveling at two hundred miles an hour. Some were killed as far as sixteen miles away.

The blast also leveled 150-foot Douglas firs, as far as seventeen miles away. A total of 3.2 billion board-feet of lumber were destroyed, enough to build 200,000 three-bedroom homes.

God’s OmnipotenceA young boy was
waiting after church for his family. The pastor saw him standing around and struck up a conversation. Since the boy had just come from Sunday school, the pastor decided to ask him some questions to determine just how much the children were learning there. He said, “Young man, if you can tell me something that God can do, I’ll give you a big shiny apple.” Thoughtfully the boy replied, “Sir, if you can tell me something God can’t do, I’ll give you a whole box of apples.”

God’s OmnipotenceThe greatest single distinguishing feature of the omnipotence of God is that our imagination gets lost when thinking about it.—Pascal, Pensees

God’s OmnipotenceOn March 5, 1979, what was called “the most powerful burst of energy ever recorded” occurred. It was described as follows:

“The burst of gamma radiation picked up by the satellites lasted for only one tenth of a second. But in that brief instant it emitted as much energy as the sun does over a period of three thousand years. If the sun had belched out the same amount of energy, the earth would have vaporized instantly.”

Reflecting on the event, astrophysicist Doyle Evans said, “Every time we think we understand the physical laws of the universe, nature seems bent on confounding us.”—Nature? Or God?
